Subject Matter and Manuscript Classes
Organic Preparations and Procedures International (OPPI) is a bimonthly publication
aimed at the dissemination of information of particular importance to organic chemists engaged in
synthesis. Manuscripts in the English language on all phases of synthetic organic chemistry will
be published in OPPI. All manuscripts are peer reviewed.
Authors should endeavor to state clearly and explicitly in both the cover letter and
in the first few sentences of the manuscript, the rationale for the work and the reasons for which
the contents are of importance to organic synthesis. OPPI does not consider the preparation
of new compounds by standard and well-established methods a sufficient reason for publication.
Other forums for the disclosure of the routine preparation of new compounds are available.
Organic Preparations and Procedures International is devoted to preparative organic chemistry,
organometallic compounds and procedures generally related to organic synthesis. The following
typical examples will serve to illustrate manuscripts that may be submitted for consideration.
- Compound(s) of unusual importance either because of their inherent value or the method utilized;
- The preparation of new compound(s) which may not constitute a self-sufficient paper may be considered for
inclusion as part of OPPI Briefs provided that the compounds and/or methods contribute new information;
- Improved procedures to prepare known compounds;
- Detailed procedures which have been worked out from incomplete or obscure directions;
- Convenient procedures which have been "rediscovered.";
- Preparation of "non-organic" reagents used by organic chemists;
- New apparatus for photochemical synthesis, kinetic measurements, etc;
- New column packing for v.p.c., etc;
- Reviews emphasizing in-depth coverage of the literature. These are usually commissioned
by the Editors. For unsolicited reviews, please contact the Editors before manuscript development.
Directions for Submission to Organic Preparations and Procedures International
- The original and two (2) photocopies (back to back to save postage!) of a typescript must be submitted. If accepted
for publication, the manuscript may be returned to the author(s) for corrections, revision and retyping according to
the Instructions for the Preparation of Manuscripts. Authors MUST NOT submit initial manuscripts via e-mail
and should not send Computer Disks until requested to do so.
- The following additional information must accompany the manuscript and is essential for the rapid and complete indexing
of the Journal: ALL manuscripts must have one sheet (8.5" x 11") listing the molecular formula
of EACH new compound synthesized. The name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the paper will be entered at
the top of the sheet (see model printed in various issues of the Journal).
Special Notice: Sample Exchange: Authors may register or deposit their available compound samples at MDPI in Switzerland.
For more information, visit
http://www.mdpi.org/ or contact MDPI Center, Saengergasse 25, CH-4054 Basel, Switzerland.

Reprints: Instead of hard copies of reprints, a pdf copy of articles will be e-mailed to authors who prepay
for reprints. a pdf copy of review articles will be e-mailed free of charge to authors of review articles. [PDF Price list]
Important Notice: The contents of the papers published in this Journal are the sole responsibility of
the author(s) and publication does not imply concurrence of the Editors or the Publisher. Submit original manuscrips NOT by email but
as hard copies (one original + two double-sided copies) typed double-spaced (consult the typical model pages in this section) by First Class or Air Mail.
Manuscripts should be submitted to:

REMINDERS TO POTENTIAL AUTHORS
The clearly stated policy of OPPI is that correct combustion analyses (within 0.30) must be reported
for all new compounds described in experimental manuscripts, unless the author(s) provide
compelling reasons why such data could not be obtained. Evidently if a compound has been reported previously,
there is no need to report such analytical data (a comparison with literature data should suffice) unless a large discrepancy
with data reported in the literature warrants the acquisition of new combustion analysis data.
On an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper (a facsimile of which is printed in any recent issue of the Journal)
a list of the molecular formulas of all new compounds prepared should accompany all experimental manuscripts.
The name of the authors (or at least that of the senior author) and the title of the manuscript should appear at the top of
the sheet. This list is necessary because it is used to compile the general formula index at the end of each year.
Because of problems translating ISIS/Draw documents we ask authors to stop submitting articles in this format.
It does not support EPS which is the standard graphic postscript language and does not translate into Chemdraw, which
is our preferred format; it cannot even translate between Mac and PC versions of itself. Also please send your original
graphic files, not just the Word file with the graphics embedded. For instance, one disk would have your article with
your graphics in position and a second disk would contain the original Chemdraw files that you used in the article.
Thank you for helping us in this, as it will make our job much easier.
The Editors
INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS ON SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Non-compliance of the following instructions will result in the return of the manuscript to the
author and delay in it being refereed or in its publication. Authors MUST NOT submit initial manuscripts via e-mail
and should not send Computer Disks until requested to do so.
Do not send Computer Disks until the manuscript has been accepted for publication.
Typing Instructions
- It is essential to use a black typewriter ribbon in good condition so that a clean and clear impression of the letters
is obtained. Erasure marks, smudges, creases, etc., should be avoided entirely; white opaque correction fluid may be used.
All formulas (and drawings) should be typed in or carefully prepared with permanent black drawing ink using drawing instruments.
In no case will "freehand" drawings be accepted. Manuscripts in their final form must be typewritten,
double spaced (except where otherwise noted), on good quality white bond paper measuring 8.5 by 11
inches. The typing area of page 1 including the title should be 6.25 by 8.5 inches and that of all other pages
6.25 by 9.5 inches. Make maximum use of the typing area (do not waste space).
- Tables should be typed vertically as part of the text but in such a way as to separate them from the text.
The title "TABLE" (with a number if more than one) should precede the table and be centered with the page.
No table should overlap onto the next page (unless it will not fit on one page).
- The same directions apply to figures. Figures should be included only when absolutely essential
to the clarity of the text. Drawings of formulas, graphs, and other numbered or unnumbered figures
should be drawn directly on the typing paper in the proper position in the text or placed in the
proper position with permanent black drawing ink (do not use blue ink) and sized to fit within the
page breadth and/or the height including any legend, label, or number associated with them
(illustrations may also be in the form of photostats pasted in place). Lettering set should be
used for all labels on figures. Lettering may not be free hand drawn (typewriter may be used for
this label). All figures and lettering must be at least 10 point in size. Again, ensure that the
caption does not become confused with the text. The full width of the type page should be used for
the caption. Captions should be typed single spaced. The abbreviation Fig. should be placed next to
the caption. Use Arabic numerals for the figure numbers. Leave extra space above the figure and below
the caption.
Note:All equations, drawings, figures, tables, etc. should be incorporated at the appropriate locations within the text.
- References in the text will be numbered consecutively by superscripts (after punctuation marks).
The full references will be collected at the end of the text. The last names of all authors to any
one paper preceded by the initials shall be quoted. The title of the journal (Italic), the volume
number (bold), the first page and the year should follow in that order (if there is no volume number,
the year should be bold). Books should be cited similarly and include the publisher's name and
location along with the year and edition of the book.
(journal): P. G. Gassman and B. L. Fox, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 89, 338 (1967).
(journal no volume number): C. W. Rees and M. Yellland, J. Chem. Soc. Perkin 1, 221 (1973).
(book): P. A. S. Smith, "Open-chain Nitrogen Compounds", Vol. 2, p. 309, W. A. Benjamin, New York, NY, 1966.
Note: The model citations given here for journals and books must be adhered to as they may
differ from those used in other journals. References to patents shall be followed, after a semi-colon,
by a Chemical Abstracts reference [Chem. Abstr., Vol., p. (year)]. Chemical Abstracts references
should similarly be given for less well-known and less readily available journals.
Format of Manuscripts
- The name of the compound or the title of the procedure, centered on the width of the typing area, should be at least two
inches from the top of the page. The name (or title) should be all in capital letters. This is followed by two line spaces
and then the name(s) and address of the author(s) on separate lines, a capital being used for the first letter of all main
words. Two line spaces are left after the name(s) and address of the author(s) before the beginning of the text. An asterisk
(*) should be placed after the name of the author(s) to whom correspondence is to be addressed. If at all possible, the equation
describing the reaction(s) utilized should appear within the textual material of the FIRST page. A one line space should be left
between the text and the title experimental section (all capitals and centered). Another one line space should be left after the
title experimental section and the detailed procedures. Physical constants, elemental analyses (+/- 0.30) and spectral data for
all new compounds (or suitable solid derivatives) MUST be reported.
- One line space is left after the text and the word references (all capitals and centered) is typed, followed,
after a one line space by full references.
- Each page of manuscript should be numbered lightly at the bottom left hand corner of the sheet with a blue pencil.
